Eagle's Cliff - Breede River

A stunning range of wines from Christiaan Groenewald in the
Breede River Valley
. The superb, appley Chenin Blanc is the
best value white wine that we list at this price. The Sauvignon Blanc
has classic almost French elegance.

Christiaan’s reds are equally fine, with a soft Merlot/Cabernet that
has good blackberry fruit with underpinning soft oak. The Cabernet and Shiraz  Reserve wines
are full of complex plummy fruit.  I am not normally a huge fan of Pinotage
but the entry point Eagle’s Cliff Pinotage is packed with soft jammy black fruit.

The Foundry  -Stellenbosch

The Foundry is Chris Williams of Meerlust’s private project and it has received remendous
accolades since its first vintage in 2001. The Syrah is an intense and complex wine that is
unfiltered and serious Rhône in style. The Viognier is a thing of beauty with white peach fruit.
It is only produced in tiny quantities (100 cases) and has received 4½ stars in Platter 2009.
We are very excited about receiveing 12% of the UK’s allocation of the new Grenache Blanc.
Tim Atkin wrote of this wine in Decanter in January ‘
Chris Williams’ Syrah and Viognier are
both top notch, but this minerally, lightly oaked Grenache could outdo them both.

Paul Cluver - Elgin

The Cluver family make some of the most intriguing aromatic wines in South Africa
and are always lauded in Platter’s Wine Guide. Close to the Southern tip of the
Cape at Hermanus, the region’s cool climate means that they are ideally suited for
the varieties below. The view from the top of the vineyard is reminiscent of the
Spey Valley and you can see why the first settlers called it Elgin. For lovers of pudding wines,
the astonishing
comes Noble Late Harvest Riesling that John Platter named
as one of his coveted 5star wines in 2009. The delectable Sauvignon Blanc was rated
best value out of a tasting of over 200 examples of this grape in
Decanter Magazine
.  Click here to visit the Paul Cluver web site.

Jordan Estate - Stellenbosch

Gary and Kathy Jordan are undoubtedly two of the greatest winemakers in South Africa.
Their 134 hectares of vineyards stretch up over the Stellenbosch Kloof.
The elegant well crafted wine is the rich, full-bodied Jordan Syrah. Their classic
Sauvignon Blanc
has long between considered one of South Africa’s finest, and
the wooded Chenin makes an attractive addition with citrus fruit combining with
creamy, spicy oak, and the massive Nine Yards Chardonnay puts many a
Côte d’Or burgundy to shame. Don’t miss the big unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon and
Merlot
, both classic examples of the winemaker’s art and the ‘Cobbler’s Hill ’ is simply
sensational; made from the best selection of all their vines, it has unbelievable structure.
The delightful Mellifera botrytis Riesling is an a must for pudding wine aficionados.

Stellar Organics - Fairtrade

Oliphants River

Winemaker, Dudley Wilson, has pioneered the ‘no sulphur’ route, making wines of increasing complexity
from this excellent Fairtrade Winery in the Oliphants River region some two hours drive north of Cape Town.
All the wines are organic as well as Fairtrade. The Shiraz Rosé was just rated in the Saturday Telegraph as
a top 10 South African wine, the ‘No Sulphur’ Cabernet is a fascinating and intense wine that might be a
glimpse of the future, while the delectable Heaven on Earth pudding wine - made from air-dried Muscat – oozes
apricot fruit. Poterion Fairtrade Communion wine is our own baby – the world’s only Fairtrade Communion Wine,
launched in February 2008 and now available in churches all around the country.
